Drywall Waste Disposal for Greater Vancouver

Q. Where and how can I dispose of drywall waste in Vancouver?

A: There are several facilities around Greater Vancouver where you can drop off drywall (also referred to as gypsum or gyproc).  In Vancouver City however, the only option is the Kent Street Transfer Station and they limit you to 1/2 of a single sheet.  Here are some other options:

  • CMI Rubbish Removal.  $80 per cubic yard (minimum charge 2 yards, prices subject to change - updated price on cmirubbishremoval.com).  Will pickup from your site. call for junk removal.

  • North Shore Transfer Station.  $100 per Tonne

  • Richmond Landfill.  $22 per cubic yard.  Limit 5 yards

  • Coquitlam Transfer Station.  $100 per Tonne.

  • New Westminster Gypsum Recycling.  $88 per Tonne.

  • Vancouver Landfill. 5400 72nd Street, Delta.  $100 per Tonne.

  • Surrey Transfer Station.   $100 per Tonne.

** Note:  Your drywall must be clean of foreign materials.  No boards or nails or garbage whatsoever.  The only exception is tile.  The Vancouver Landfill will accept drywall with tile attached.  If you are dropping gypsum with tile to another facility, call ahead first.

Q. How much does it cost to dump old Drywall?

A: The cost is typically $100 per metric Tonne including taxes, although the New West site is a little cheaper at $82.50 plus tax (or about $88) per Tonne.  The best way to estimate this is to measure your pile of drywall and use $25 per cubic yard as your cost.  You can also get a bin dropped off and will be charged a fee for the bin rental plus disposal costs or hire a junk removal company to load it and haul it away.

Q. What happens to the drywall after I drop it at the landfill?

A: Drywall is shipped to a recycling plant and is never buried at the landfill.

Q. What is the difference between drywall, gyproc and gypsum?

A: Gyproc is a brand name for a drywall provider in the same way that Kleenex is a brand name for a type of tissue.  The Gyproc brand dominated the market at one time and many people still refer to the product by this name.  Gypsum is simply another name for drywall.
